The Pontifical Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua

Which the people of Padua call The Saint, is the main monument in Padua and one of the world's greatest masterpieces of art. Recognised by the Holy See as an international shrine, it is also one of the most famous and popular places of worship in Christendom. The architect is unknown; he was probably a Franciscan of genius and vast figurative culture. The temple was begun in 1232 in honour of St. Anthony of Padua and was completed in its main part in the late 1200s.

in Padua is an absolute masterpiece of art. Today only visited by numerous tourists in small groups and by appointment, it was built at the behest of a rich and powerful usurer, Enrico Scrovegni, and frescoed by Giotto in 855 days between 1302 and 1305. Used as a family chapel annexed to the rich palace, built on a Roman amphitheatre dating back to 60 B.C., its interior presents about 1000 square metres of paintings dedicated to the Old and New Testament.

One of the symbols of Padua, it is a large elliptical square that, besides being the largest square in Padua, is one of the largest in Europe, second only to Moscow's Red Square. The square is actually a large monumental space characterised by a central green island, called Isola Memmia in honour of the podestà who commissioned the work, surrounded by a canal adorned by a double base of numbered statues of famous people from the past. Four avenues cross the meadow on small bridges, meeting at the centre of the islet.

This was the ancient seat of the city courts of Padua. It was erected starting in 1218 and raised in 1306 by Giovanni degli Eremitani, who gave it the characteristic roof in the shape of an inverted ship's hull. The upper floor is occupied by the largest hanging room in the world, known as the 'Salone' (measuring 81 metres by 27 metres and 27 metres high) with a wooden ceiling in the shape of a ship's hull. It is part of the Communal Palace of Padua.

In Padua they bring together the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art. Since 1985 the museums have been housed in the cloisters of the former convent of the Hermit Friars. For some years now, the overlooking Palazzo Zuckermann, which houses the Museum of Applied Arts and the Bottacin Museum, has also been part of the city museums. The oldest core of the museum is the ancient collection of the Lateran Canons of San Giovanni di Verdara, which was made public in 1784. Attached to the complex is the Scrovegni Chapel with its famous cycle of frescoes by Giotto. Recently, the Museum of the Risorgimento and Contemporary Age was set up on the main floor of the Caffè Pedrocchi.
